NEW ORLEANS, LA. (THECOUNT) — A 27-year-old New Orleans woman, who was detained and questioned by Jefferson Parish investigators over the Friday shooting death of her husband, was released from custody and will likely not be charged, according to officials.
The woman, who has not been identified, told deputies that her husband began physically abusing her during an escalated altercation Friday night and he also attempted to strangle her inside their Transcontinental Drive dwelling. She told investigators that she shot him fearing that he would kill her.
Police say they found no previous incidents reported to law enforcement but say she was able to provide them a “significant amount” of evidence to back her statements, according to police.
The woman remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators claiming a long history of physical and psychological abuse by her husband.
Investigators say multiple physical injuries were visible and corroborated the victim’s accounting of events leading upto the deadly shooting.
Sheriff Joseph Lopinto says deputies responded to a call just before 9 p.m. at a home in the 2900 block of Transcontinental Drive after a woman called 911 stating that she had just shot her husband. Once deputies arrived at the scene, they found a man inside of the home suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman has not been charged in the shooting and was later released from custody. source
