LAS VEGAS, NV. (THECOUNT) — Law SB259, that just went into effect in Las Vegas, NV, Oct 1 – Now requires convicted DUI offenders to install a breathalyzer gateway in all of their vehicles, according to the new law.
The new law will now require all Nevada drivers who were charged with drunk driving to be fitted with a ignition interlock device. The device measures the alcohol level in the driver’s breath as it’s blown through a mouthpiece. If the device detects x amount of alcohol, the vehicle will not operate.
The Anti-DUI device also includes a front-facing camera that uses “facial recognition,” technology to confirm the blowing driver’s identity.
Law SB259 went into effect Oct. 1, 2018. According to the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, any person arrested for DUI is required to install a ignition interlock device in order to reinstate their driving privileges. source
Nevada joins 30 states that have implemented the law.
Officials expect the number of devices distributed to exceed 10,000 within the first two years, according to a release.
According to the Office of Traffic Safety, states that implemented the ignition interlock device laws enjoyed a 16 percent drop in drunk driving related fatalities.
