DOD: Decorated WV Army Soldier On Seventh Deployment Dies After Hit By Small Arms Fire

THORNTON, WV. (THECOUNT) — The Department of Defense has identified Army Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy Allen Bolyard, of Thornton, West Virginia, as the warrior killed Sept. 3, 2018, of wounds sustained from small arms fire.

Bolyard 42, was stationed at Fort Carson from 2001 to 2011 and then again from 2013 to 2014.

The DOD says Command Sgt. Maj. Bolyard

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Command. Sgt. Maj. Tim Bolyard. His selflessness and dedication to his country and fellow Soldiers always will be remembered,” said Security Force Assistance Command (SFAC) Commanding General Brig. Gen. Mark H. Landes. “The Bolyard Family is in our prayers as we make every effort to honor them in memory of his ultimate sacrifice.” source

Bolyard, an armor/cavalry scout senior sergeant, served as the squadron command sergeant major assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3rd Squadron, 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade, assigned to Fort Benning, Ga. He was on his seventh deployment. Previous combat deployments include: Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar and Albania.

Bolyard started his service in June of 1994. Bolyard’s awards and decorations include: Bronze Star Medal with Valor, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with four Campaign Stars, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal Kosovo Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, United Nations Medal NATO Medal, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Superior Unit Award and Combat Action Badge.

He was supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

The incident is under investigation.
