BENNINGTON, NE. (THECOUNT) — Bennington Police Chief Les Johnson, 51, died overnight, Bennington officials confirmed to KETV.
The death was sudden and unexpected, officials added.
Mayor Matt John issued the following statement:
“I was informed early this morning that our Police Chief Les Johnson passed away suddenly and unexpectedly last night. He was recovering from an off-duty accident in June and had not yet been able to return to duty. Chief Johnson started with Bennington as a part-time officer in 1992 and was elevated to Chief of Police in 2004 where he has served us ever since. He was 51 years old. He leaves behind his wife Alice and his daughters.
“We have asked that flags be lowered to half staff in Bennington in honor and remembrance of our Chief. Services are pending. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
