DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (THECOUNT) — Thornell Sledge, 24, of Petersburg, Caleb Q. Smith, 25, of Newport News, and Jhanae Short, 18, of Petersburg, were charged with conspiracy to commit murder in the death of Umar Abdus Salaam, according to the Dinwiddie Sheriff’s Office.
Salaam, of Petersburg, was identified as the man shot and killed Wednesday morning near the Shell gas station located at 5615 Boydton Plank Rd, Petersburg, VA.
Salaam, 47, was found laying on the roadway near Burger King on Boydton Plank Rd., according to Dinwiddie County Sheriff’s Major William Knott.
Timothy Couch, manager at Zoe’s Bubbles and Sudz Detailing, said he worked with, and was friends with Salaam.
“His arms were always opened to bring people in and lift them up. So it’s kind of bad that it went down like this,” said Couch of Salaam. source
Salaam was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Anyone with information on the fatal shooting is urged to contact police at 911.
All three suspects booked at Meherrin River Regional Jail without bond.
