Pete Rose is baseball’s all-time leader in hits, but that won’t help him escape a lifetime ban from the game he loves. In 1989, MLB determined he bet on games while he helmed the Cincinnati Reds.

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred reportedly won’t lift the lifetime ban for Rose, according to ESPN.

Mr. Manfred had planned to inform Mr. Rose of his decision on Thursday. But after an inquiry by The Times on Monday morning, Mr. Manfred called Mr. Rose and told him that he would not lift the ban. A statement from Major League Baseball then followed. h/t NYTimes

Rose has been allowed back into baseball — in the 1999 World Series, when he took part in a pregame ceremony in Atlanta to honor the all-century team; and in a 2010 ceremony at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati that marked the 25th anniversary of the hit that made him the sport’s career leader.
