Saturday summer bummer on Socal beaches as a authorities have ordered beachgoers off the sand over intense lightning strikes.
Lightning along the coastline around 8 a.m. prompted the clearing, according to the L.A. County Fire department. The closure remains in effect and it was unclear how long they would remain closed.
Beachgoers were advised to take lifeguards’ advice and seek shelter indoors. “If thunder roars, go indoors,” the Fire Department tweeted. Showers and thunderstorms began to develop around 7 a.m. and became “more widespread” by 9 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. Heavy rains were possible, and similar weather activity was predicted to soon hit Ventura County. h/t ktla
Prior to the beach clearing, the Fire Department stated 4-to 7-foot surf was expected at south-facing beaches, which also faced an increased risk of rip currents.
