Mermaid hoax! Animal Planet’s “documentary” on mermaids garnered a huge audience, of believers, but now those same folks are crying foul after the show turned out to be a hoax.
The fake documentary, “Mermaids: The New Evidence,” drew in 3.6 million viewers, many of who believed hook, line, and sinker that the facts presented were true. But Charlie Foley, the “Mermaids” creator, writer, executive producer and senior vice president of development for Animal Planet, spilled the truth earlier this week.
“I wanted the story to appeal to a sense of genuine possibility, and incorporating real science and evolutionary theory and real-world scientific examples — such as animals that have made the transition from land to sea, much as we suggest mermaids did — and citing real, albeit controversial theories like the Aquatic Ape Hypothesis, grounded it,” he told Mother Nature Network. “Using a straight, documentarian approach made the story more persuasive by appealing more to a sense of intellectual possibility as well as emotional possibility.”
There was even reportedly a disclaimer in the credits at the end of the show, stating that it was science fiction.
Those who were duped by the show and believed that mermaids were real expressed their disappointment on Twitter.
“Mermaids: The New Evidence” is a follow-up to last year’s wildly popular “Mermaids: The Body Found,” which generated almost instant social media fodder. That, too, was revealed to be a “mockumentary.”

no way
They will still be believed because most people aren't moronic enough to actually believe in Mermaids to begin with. I guess these same people still believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Lunar Landing as well.
I can't believe all you dumbasses thought mermaids were real, what's next? Santa and the Easter bunny?
the people that believed it should be pissed. Pissed at themselves that they are so dumb they actually believed it.
It looked really good.
To be honest I'm not pissed. We watched different types of video; there were two real life Dr.'s who were shut down by the government when exposing what they saw. The boy who was on the beach had the video on his cell phone, and the authorities came and confiscated his drawings and whatever else he had, but forgot about the boys cell phone. Why would you fabricate all of that when doing a documentary? Would you not just do like the animal planet always does when it portrays what dinosaurs were like and how they lived? What was the point in bringing on a real life British Royal Navy captain to deny what was on video? Why don't we find out if it's real or not? It's best we contact the Dr's; it seemed like they were scared to really say a lot about the topic, and I'm sure the authorities were the ones who are spewing hoax everywhere, to prevent further research on the topic, and they forced Animal Planet to add in the credits this was a fabricated documentary. Who the hell spends money on a fabricated documentary? Two acclaimed Dr's work together to make a fabricated documentary doesn't seem right to me. Maybe I need to contact these people and get to the bottom of this; because if I see a mermaid I'm splashing it all over social media and I'm letting you know it's real. I've had people in my family who have seen them, so believe what you want, but don't just believe something, because someone told you; do your own research.
well the problem with the hoax's people that have done good documentaries will not ever be believed so documentaries should be pretty much gone because of this bs.
Had you going for a minute? YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS. If you didn't see that as fake from the first 20 seconds, i'm afraid many people will take advantage of you in your life sweetie.
I watched it...it was amazing...had me going for a minute. What they can do with computers is so cool. I just wish they wouldn't lie to us. The disclamer was in the credits at the end. Who ever reads all of those anyway. But, I still enjoyed the show. Good job!
true!
