OMG! A Brazilian woman gives birth to twins at the ripe old age of 61! That will make her 71 when her child grows to 10-years-old and over 80 by the time the kid reaches 20! And get this, it is her first time giving birth!
According to NYDailyNews:
A Brazilian woman, Antonia Leticia Rovati Asti, gave birth for the first time on Tuesday — a week after turning 61. The late-life pregnancy was possible in part because of Dr. Orlando de Castro Neto, an assisted reproduction specialist. Now that the twins have been born, Neto thinks the new mother’s greatest challenge will be society’s perception surrounding women who give birth late in life. But the stigma did not affect his decision to help Asti. “The age didn’t matter at all,” her Dr. Orlando de Castro Neto said. “The only condition is that a woman has a uterus.”
Asti’s 10-year-old frozen embryos — left over from a failed in-vitro fertilization attempt in 2002 — were fertilized with her husband’s sperm. The artificial insemination resulted in the birth of Sofia and Roberto by Caesarean section at Sao Lucas Hospital in Santos, reported EFE. Asti initially approached Neto with her desire to become a mother in 1992. After previous unsuccessful efforts to become pregnant, Asti decided to adopt but was rejected on account of her age.
This was the aging couple’s last chance to have children together. Now that they are parents, they do not intend to take Sofia and Roberto for granted. “I will love these children very much and work hard to put food in their mouths,” her husband said in the delivery room after the births.
