Coca-Cola and Pepsi have been outed. The competitive companies have been using the same carcinogenic ingredient in their drinks for many years, called 4-methylimidazole (4-MEI).
4-MEI is a molecule that forms during heating and browning processes, and in Coke and Pepsi- the molecule is found in their “caramel coloring”.
California just added 4-MEI in its list of known carcinogens after doing a study on mice and rats who ingested 4-MEI, then developed cancer. Yep, cancer!
Coke and Pepsi just decided to reduce the 4-MEI level in their sodas, so they don’t have to display a “CANCER WARNING” label, but they aren’t going to take it out of the recipe.
But the US Food and Drug Administration says that there’s no risk of cancer, unless you drink more than one thousand cans a day. If that’s the case, then why were the Cancer Warning labels about to be stamped onto every Coke and Pepsi soda can? Is the FDA in bed with Coke?
