State Police say, a Freightliner semi-truck operated by Rolando J. Rivas, 60, of Denver, CO. was traveling eastbound in the left lane when he became distracted by a dropped cell phone. As Rivas reached for the phone, his tractor trailer traveled into opposing lanes and collided with Williams’ Cadillac.

The impact caused both vehicles to exit the right side of the roadway.

Williams was ejected from his vehicle during the violent collision.

He was pronounced dead of multiple blunt for trauma injuries at the scene.

Rivas was transported to Ochsner Medical Center-North Shore, and was treated for minor injuries, reports WAFB.

Troopers do not believe impairment played a role in the crash, however, blood samples were collected from the drivers and will be submitted to the crime lab for analysis.

Rivas was cited at the scene and charged with “Improper Lane Use,” according to police.

Troopers will forward their findings to the St. Tammany Parish District Attorney’s Office. More charges are possible.
