EL PASO, TX. (THECOUNT) — An El Paso sheriff’s deputy was shot in the head during a traffic stop early Friday morning in San Elizario, Texas officials said.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputies pulled over a vehicle at about 1:50 a.m. Friday in the 1000 block of Chicken Ranch Road near Socorro Road in San Elizario, according to El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, ElPasoTimes reported Friday.

One of the people in the vehicle allegedly got out and fired several shots at the deputy, officials said. The suspects then fled.

The deputy was struck several times including in the back of the head and taken to a hospital for treatment.

The deputy did not fire any shots, officials said.

The deputy is critical but stable condition and is currently in surgery, officials said.

Two suspects in the vehicle were found about two blocks from where the shooting happened. The suspects were arrested.

Investigators also found the gun allegedly used in the shooting.

The shooting is currently under investigation by the sheriff’s office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers and other state and local law enforcement agencies.

No further information has been released.
