AZ Woman Charissa Coleman ID’d As Victim In Sunday Night Phoenix Street Racing Fatal Crash

MARICOPA COUNTY, AZ. (THECOUNT) — Charissa Rae Coleman, of Phoenix, Arizona, has been identified as the innocent victim killed in an apparent street racing crash Sunday night in Maricopa County.

Coleman, 28, was killed in a crash that was likely a street racing related incident Sunday night.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, a Chevrolet Camaro and an Infiniti Q50 were “side-by-side,” while traveling at a high rate of speed on West Indian School Road near North 91st Avenue in Phoenix, when the Infiniti made contact with a Jeep Patriot, operated by Coleman.

Coleman was transported to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead of blunt force trauma injuries.

An unidentified 34-year-old man operating the Infiniti was transported with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials say, the hospitalized Infiniti driver will be booked into jail upon discharge for manslaughter.

The race-involved black Camaro fled the scene following the crash.

Police ask anyone with possible information on driver of the black Camaro to call Silent Witness at (480) WITNESS or (480) TESTIGO.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

PIMA COUNTY, AZ. (THECOUNT) — Bob Walkup, former Tucson mayor, has died, confirmed his son Jonathan via a Facebook post Saturday morning. He was 85.

Jonathan said in-part in his post:

“He was everything a dad could be and more. I was/am so proud of him – he was truly an inspiration and my hero.”

Walkup had been battling Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

“That means my lungs are forming scar tissue and that means my genes, somewhere back in Scotland, so somewhere back in Scotland I got a little gene, brother has it and my father had that problem,” Walkup said.

Missing KY Man John Pennington ID’d As Body Found At Grand Canyon Wednesday

COCONINO COUNTY, AZ. (THECOUNT) — Missing Walton, Kentucky, man, John Pennington, has been identified as the body found Wednesday at Grand Canyon National Park.

The body of Pennington, 40, was located around 450 feet below the South Kaibab Trailhead in Coconino County on Wednesday after going missing February 23.

According to reports, Pennington was previously reported missing at Grand Canyon National Park while riding a motorcycle inside the park.

Searchers found the body on Wednesday approximately 465 feet below the South Kaibab Trailhead, officials said in a statement.

Evidence found with the body indicated it was Pennington, who was believed to have entered the park on or about Feb. 23, a statement said.

The National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office were investigating the incident, the statement said.

A cause of death was not provided.

MARICOPA COUNTY, AZ. (THECOUNT) — Ethan Peed, of Show Low, Arizona, has been identified as the pedestrian in a fatal Saturday night vehicle strike in Maricopa County.

Peed, 31, was killed after he was struck by a vehicle near Phoenix Saturday night.

According to reports, Peed was on-foot in the area of Greenway Road in Phoenix, when he was struck by a passing SUV around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

The SUV driver remained on-scene and fully cooperated with arriving officials.

COCHISE COUNTY, AZ. (THECOUNT) — Troy Eadler of Sierra Vista, Arizona, has been identified as the pedestrian in a fatal Thursday box truck strike in Cochise County.

Eadler, 45, Director Of Golf at Castle & Cooke and former golf pro at Pueblo Del Sol Country Club, was killed after he was struck by a box truck near Sierra Vista on Thursday.

According to reports, Eadler was on-foot on State Route 92 in the area of Mile Marker 330, when for unknown reasons, he ran in front of a box truck around 6:14 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators say they have “not ruled out suicide.”

The driver of the box truck remained on scene.

AZ Man Mark Bettencourt ID’d As Victim In Thursday Night Hereford Fatal Vehicle Crash

COCHISE COUNTY, AZ. (THECOUNT) — Mark Bettencourt, of Hereford, Arizona, has been identified as the victim in a fatal Thursday vehicle crash in Cochise County.

Bettencourt, 31, was killed in a two-vehicle crash near Hereford Thursday night.

According to reports, Bettencourt was operating a Honda Accord on Route 92 near Turkey Track Road, when for unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed centerlines and into opposing lanes around 5:40 p.m. Thursday. The vehicle then came into head-on contact with a GMC pickup truck.

Bettencourt was pronounced dead at the scene of blunt force trauma injuries.

The pickup driver was transported to an area hospital with unknown non-life threatening injuries.

TX Man Charles Gardner ID’d As Victim In Wednesday Night Snyder Fatal 3-Wheeled Vehicle Crash

SCURRY COUNTY, TX. (THECOUNT) — Charles Gardner of Glenn Heights, Texas, has been identified as the victim in a fatal three-wheel vehicle crash in Scurry County Wednesday.

Gardner, 48, was killed in Wednesday night in a single-vehicle crash near Snyder, Texas.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Gardner was operating a Polaris Slingshot, when the vehicle apparently hydroplaned while on U.S. Highway 180 outside of Snyder around 6:15 Wednesday. The vehicle then exited the roadway and entered a culvert before making contact with a fence.

Gardner, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene of blunt force trauma injuries.

AZ Prison Whistleblower Gabriela Contreras Found Dead Sunday Night ‘Suicide’

BUCKEYE, AZ. (THECOUNT) — Arizona whistleblower, Gabriela Contreras, a Lewis prison prison guard who leaked video showing inmates exiting cells with broken locks and attacking guards, has been found dead Sunday night.

Contreras, 31, was found dead Sunday night around 11:30 p.m. of an apparent suicide. The medical examiner has not yet officially determined her cause of death.

The Arizona Department of Corrections released a statement after Contreras’ death came to light:

“On behalf of the men and women of the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry, I would like to express our deepest condolences to the family of Correctional Officer III Ana Gabriela Contreras, who passed away early this morning. This is a sad day for us all, and tragic loss as she was a valued member of our team.”

The video Contreras released led to a state investigation into prison safety as officials worked to address the lock issues at Lewis prison in Buckeye, reports KENS.

Contreras claimed she faced retaliation after exposing the safety concerns. She said at a news conference last year she went a week without pay and lost a promotion.

Contreras’ allegations of retaliation led to an investigation that ended in officials throwing out disciplinary actions for the correctional officers involved in releasing the video.

AZ Teen Felix Cardoza ID’d As Victim In Tuesday Night Phoenix Street Racing Crash

PHOENIX, AZ. (THECOUNT) — Felix Cardoza, of Buckeye, Arizona, has been identified as the victim in a fatal Phoenix street racing crash Tuesday night.

Cardoza, 18, was killed in a street racing crash on State Route 51 in Phoenix, according to the Department of Public Safety.

According to reports, the crash happened on State Route 51 near East Shea Boulevard around 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Cardoza was racing another car when his Audi veered off the right side of the freeway. The Audi slammed into a concrete retaining wall and then rolled back onto the roadway. When the car finally came to a stop, it was blocking the HOV lane and the lane next to it under the Shea Boulevard overpass, reports AZFamily.

The crash was so severe the involved vehicle was nearly unrecognizable. Its engine was seen in the lanes next to it.

Officials said witnesses helped troopers find the second car involved in the race. It was on the northbound off-ramp for Shea Boulevard. There were two people in that car, but investigators have not released their names.

Massive AZ Explosion Heard After ‘Green Meteor’ Seen Streaking Across Sky Sunday Morning

YAVAPAI COUNTY, AZ. (THECOUNT) — A massive boom was heard as reports of a meteor sighting flooded law enforcement phones on Sunday morning across a wide swath of Arizona.

Multiple citizens called local news outlets Sunday morning, reporting a green meteor streaking in the sky followed by a large explosion.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received multiple calls Sunday morning “from every corner” of the county reporting a loud boom/blast/explosion noise.

YCSO says the source of the noise is currently unknown, although there have been reports from citizens of a meteor sighting around Arizona and in the Valley as well, reports 12News.
