SAN DIEGO, CA. (THECOUNT) — Gregg Owens, the Henderson, Nevada, man swept out to sea off Ocean Beach after rescuing his dogs, has died at San Diego, California, area hospital, authorities said Thursday.
Owens and his wife, Maureen, were walking their dogs Wednesday around 2 p.m. near Dog Beach, when the dogs began struggling in the high surf.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office said Owens entered into the water and successfully rescued the animals, but was then dragged back into the ocean water by strong currents.
Owens was reportedly swept about 75 yards from shore being slammed into rocks along the way. He was found about 20 minutes later face down and unresponsive.
San Diego Lifeguards rescued Owens and brought him to shore, performing CPR before he was rushed to UC San Diego Medical Center, according to 10news.
The medical examiner said Owens was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit where he was later pronounced dead.
No other details on the victim were officially released.
The dogs survived and are believed to make a full recovery.

According to Facebook, the couple had recently been vacationing in California when the tragic accident occurred.
