R&B Legend Freddie Jackson Dies ‘You Are My Lady’ Singer

NEW YORK, NY. (THECOUNT) — Freddie Jackson, the legendary R&B singer whose powerhouse voice propelled hits including “You Are My Lady” and “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake),” has died at 70.

Jackson’s family announced his death Tuesday, saying the celebrated singer “went home to rest” Monday night. A cause of death was not disclosed.

His family remembered Jackson as a kind and generous soul who loved his fans, family, friends and music, saying his songs became the soundtrack to love stories, celebrations and treasured memories for generations of listeners.

Born and raised in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood, Jackson began singing gospel music at White Rock Baptist Church before pursuing a professional music career. He later sang with the band Mystic Merlin and worked as a backup singer for Melba Moore before signing with Capitol Records.

Jackson broke through in 1985 with his debut album, Rock Me Tonight. The title track reached No. 1 on the R&B chart and remained there for six weeks, while “You Are My Lady” became another R&B chart-topper and one of his signature songs. The album went platinum.

He followed with a string of major R&B hits, including “Have You Ever Loved Somebody,” “Jam Tonight,” “Tasty Love,” “Nice ’N’ Slow” and “Do Me Again.” Jackson ultimately recorded 10 No. 1 R&B singles, establishing himself as one of the defining voices of romantic R&B during the 1980s.

Jackson earned Grammy nominations during his career and continued recording music for decades. His final album, My First Love, was released in 2023.

Jackson’s family said details about funeral arrangements and ways to honor his legacy will be announced in the coming days.
