PA Pair Mark Jones, Shaelynn Moore ID’d In Wednesday Pittsburgh Double-Fatal Shooting

PITTSBURGH, PA. (THECOUNT) — Mark Allen Jones, 24, and Shaelynn Maria Moore, 30, were found fatally shot Wednesday morning inside a Pittsburgh apartment, where police are investigating a possible murder-suicide following a reported domestic altercation.

Pittsburgh is the seat of Allegheny County in southwestern Pennsylvania and is the region’s largest city. The shooting occurred in an apartment on Hazlett Street in the city’s Northview Heights neighborhood, approximately three miles east of the Brighton Heights neighborhood where Moore reportedly lived.

Pittsburgh police officers responded to the apartment at approximately 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, after receiving a ShotSpotter alert reporting two rounds of gunfire, according to the Pittsburgh Public Safety Department.

Officers entered the apartment and found a man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner later identified the deceased as Jones and Moore.

Four children, ages 11, 9, 7 and 7, were also inside the apartment when police arrived. None of the children was physically injured in the shooting, according to authorities.

Police believe the children are Moore’s. They were taken to a children’s hospital as a precaution and are expected to undergo forensic interviews as investigators work to establish what occurred inside the apartment.

Authorities have not publicly established the relationship between Jones and Moore. According to reporting by the Tribune-Review, Jones lived in Northview Heights, while Moore had been associated with an address in Brighton Heights.

Records cited by the Tribune-Review reportedly show that Moore listed the Hazlett Street property as her address when filing paperwork in a tenant appeal last year. The circumstances surrounding her presence at the apartment Wednesday have not been fully disclosed.

Pittsburgh Public Safety Department spokesperson Emily Bourne said witnesses reported a “domestic altercation” before the gunfire. Police are investigating whether the incident was a murder-suicide, although authorities have not released a final determination regarding how the two died.

Bourne also characterized the deceased individuals as a “shooter” and a “victim” while speaking with the Tribune-Review, but officials have not provided additional details about which person investigators believe fired the shots or what led to the shooting.

Investigators also recovered shell casings outside the apartment building, according to the Tribune-Review. Those findings have raised questions about whether the shooting began outside before continuing inside the residence. The exact sequence of events remains under investigation.

Police said there are no outstanding suspects and no ongoing threat to the public. Investigators continue to examine physical evidence, witness accounts and the circumstances surrounding the deaths as they work to determine what happened.

The deaths remain under investigation by Pittsburgh police and the Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner. Authorities have not announced additional details regarding the cause and manner of death beyond the reported gunshot wounds.
