DES ALLEMANDS, LA. (THECOUNT)Hubert Matherne III, 40, of Des Allemands, was fatally struck by a vehicle early Wednesday while walking along U.S. Highway 90 in St. Charles Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.

Des Allemands is a community in St. Charles Parish in southeastern Louisiana, located along the U.S. 90 corridor between the New Orleans metropolitan area and Morgan City. The fatal pedestrian crash occurred near Carlon Drive.

According to troopers, Matherne was walking in the westbound lanes of U.S. 90 shortly before 3:30 a.m. when he was struck by a westbound 2020 Chevrolet Traverse.

Matherne suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said. He was also known by the nickname “Dougie.”

Investigators said Matherne was wearing light-colored clothing at the time he was struck. Authorities have not released additional information about why he was walking in the westbound lanes or the events immediately preceding the collision.

The driver of the Chevrolet Traverse was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the crash, according to Louisiana State Police.

State police said impairment is not believed to have been a factor in the collision. Troopers nevertheless collected routine toxicology samples as part of the investigation.

The crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not announced any charges in connection with the fatal pedestrian collision.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash as they work to determine the sequence of events that led to Matherne being struck on the highway.
