SAN ANTONIO, TX. (THECOUNT) — Luis Martinez, 63, died after a wrong-way crash Friday night on Roosevelt Avenue near Loop 410 in San Antonio, according to the San Antonio Police Department. Authorities said Martinez was driving intoxicated northbound in the southbound lanes when his vehicle collided head-on with another car after both vehicles attempted to change lanes in an effort to avoid each other.
San Antonio is located in south-central Texas and is the state’s second-largest city, approximately 80 miles southwest of Austin. The crash occurred near the Loop 410 and Roosevelt Avenue interchange, a heavily traveled corridor on the city’s South Side.

Police said the collision occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. Friday. Investigators determined Martinez was traveling the wrong direction on Roosevelt Avenue when an oncoming vehicle attempted to evade him by changing lanes. Authorities said Martinez also moved into the same lane, resulting in a head-on collision.
According to investigators, Martinez displayed signs consistent with intoxication following the crash. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries approximately seven hours later.
The driver of the other vehicle attempted to avoid the collision before impact. Authorities have not released the driver’s identity or disclosed the extent of any injuries sustained in the crash.
The San Antonio Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. No additional information regarding possible contributing factors or any pending findings has been released.
