TN Mayor Joe Brooks ID’d As Victim In Friday Union County Fatal Motorcycle Crash

UNION COUNTY, TN. (THECOUNT)Joe Brooks, 56, of Claiborne County, Tennessee, died Friday night following a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on Highway 33 near the Claiborne County line, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Brooks was serving as Claiborne County Mayor and was seeking re-election this year.

Union County is located in eastern Tennessee, northeast of Knoxville and adjacent to Claiborne County. The crash occurred on State Highway 33 between Beach Island Road and Sharps Chapel Road, a rural stretch of roadway near the county line.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said the crash occurred at approximately 11:05 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026. Brooks was operating a motorcycle northbound on Highway 33 when he failed to maintain his lane of travel while negotiating a curve in the roadway.

According to investigators, Brooks failed to negotiate the curve and departed the roadway to the right, striking a guardrail before re-entering the northbound lane. The motorcycle eventually came to an uncontrolled final rest in the outside northbound lane.

Due to the severity of his injuries, Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initial reports suggested that other motorcyclists may have been involved in the incident. However, the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s crash report lists Brooks as the sole individual involved in the fatal crash.

Brooks was a lifelong resident of Claiborne County and a seventh-generation farmer. Following his graduation from high school, he served in the United States Navy before attending college. Throughout his career, he worked on his family’s farm, held positions in sales and management, and later worked in the mental health field.

He was elected Claiborne County Mayor in August 2018 and was actively seeking another term in office during the 2026 election cycle.

Aaron Reed, Administrator of Elections for Claiborne County, said election officials were devastated by the loss and described Brooks as someone who was consistently supportive of the county’s public servants and residents.

Reed stated that the election commission is working through the legal and administrative protocols associated with Brooks’ death as it relates to the upcoming election. He said additional guidance will be provided following an appropriate period of mourning.

Election officials have confirmed that the August 6 election will continue as scheduled.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal motorcycle crash.
