CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, S.C. (THECOUNT) — Maxie Gainey, 61, of Patrick, South Carolina, was identified as the man killed in a multi-vehicle crash involving a deer on Friday on Highway 1 near the Patrick community.
Chesterfield County Deputy Coroner John James provided preliminary information on the incident. A southbound passenger car, a northbound tractor-trailer, and a following SUV were involved in the chain-reaction crash.

Gainey was traveling in the SUV. According to James, a car traveling south on Highway 1 struck a deer. The impact sent the deer into the northbound lane, where it was then struck by an oncoming tractor-trailer.
The truck driver braked to avoid the deer. An SUV traveling behind the tractor-trailer then crashed into the rear of the truck. Gainey, who was an occupant of the SUV, died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Chesterfield County is located in the northeastern portion of South Carolina. The area is rural, and Highway 1 serves as a major north-south route through the county.
James said the crash remains under investigation. A forensic autopsy has been scheduled as part of the ongoing probe. No further details on contributing factors have been released at this time.
