BENTON TOWNSHIP, OH. (THECOUNT) —Danny Avery, 60, of Perrysburg, Ohio, was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Benton Township on Monday afternoon. Joseph Hartford, 19, of Genoa, has been identified as the other involved driver.

Avery was pronounced dead at the scene after he was ejected from his vehicle during a rollover crash. According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Ohio 163 at Elliston Trowbridge Road in Ottawa County.

Hartford was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu southbound on Elliston Trowbridge Road. Hartford failed to yield at a stop sign and struck Avery’s 2017 Jeep Compass, which was traveling eastbound on Ohio 163. Both vehicles left the roadway, and Avery’s Jeep overturned, ejecting him from the vehicle.

Hartford was not injured in the crash. Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

Lt. Shawn Robinson of the Ohio Highway Patrol’s Fremont Post said weather did not appear to be a primary factor, though the roadways were wet from earlier rainfall in the area. Parts of Ottawa County had experienced flooding conditions from heavy rains earlier in the day.

“The roadways were wet, and it was raining slightly, but the heavy, heavy stuff had passed by that point,” Robinson said. “We’re still trying to piece it all together. We will have to do some more digging, to get all the information here.”

The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio Highway Patrol. No charges have been filed at this time.

Ohio 163 is a two-lane state route that runs through rural portions of Ottawa County. The intersection with Elliston Trowbridge Road is located in Benton Township, west of Port Clinton.

The Ohio Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash, including vehicle speeds, visibility, and road conditions at the time of the collision.
