AUSTIN, MN. (THECOUNT) — William Jolan Wyche, 21, has been identified as the victim of a fatal single-vehicle crash early Thursday morning in Austin, Minnesota.

According to the Austin Police Department, officers responded at approximately 3:18 a.m. to the area of East Oakland Avenue and 10th Street Southeast following reports of a serious collision.

When officers arrived, they located a silver Ford Fusion that had struck the center concrete support of an overhead bridge.

Authorities said Wyche, whose last known address was in Rochester, was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police identified Wyche through a Florida driver’s license recovered during the investigation.

Investigators said preliminary findings indicate the vehicle was traveling at a very high rate of speed before the collision.

According to authorities, investigators found no evidence of braking or any apparent attempt to avoid striking the bridge support.

The crash occurred at the intersection of East Oakland Avenue and 10th Street Southeast in Austin, the county seat of Mower County in southeastern Minnesota. Austin is located along Interstate 90 and serves as a regional center for commerce, healthcare, and transportation in southern Minnesota.

The area where the crash occurred includes roadway infrastructure connecting local traffic to major transportation routes serving the Austin community. Bridges and overpasses in the vicinity carry both local and regional traffic through the city.

Rochester, where Wyche was last known to reside, is located approximately 40 miles north of Austin and is the third-largest city in Minnesota. Rochester is home to the Mayo Clinic and serves as a major medical and economic hub for southeastern Minnesota.

Single-vehicle crashes involving fixed objects are routinely investigated by law enforcement agencies to determine contributing factors and establish the sequence of events leading up to the collision. Investigators typically examine roadway evidence, vehicle damage, witness statements, and other available information as part of the review process.

The Austin Police Department remained at the scene Thursday morning while evidence was documented and the area was examined.

The Minnesota State Patrol is assisting with the ongoing investigation.

Additional support at the scene was provided by the Austin Fire Department and Mayo Ambulance.
