NASHVILLE, Tenn. (THECOUNT) — William Scott, of Nashville, Tennessee, was killed Wednesday afternoon following a motorcycle crash involving a Mercedes Benz sedan along Hermitage Avenue in Nashville, the state capital and the largest city in Middle Tennessee, according to authorities.
Scott was 35 years old.
The fatal collision was reported at approximately 4:40 p.m. Wednesday on Hermitage Avenue, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department.
A preliminary investigation determined Scott was operating a Kawasaki ZX1 motorcycle southbound on Hermitage Avenue when the motorcycle collided with the driver’s side of a Mercedes sedan that was crossing Hermitage Avenue from Academy Place.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported Scott to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, police said.
Investigators spent hours examining the crash scene and interviewing witnesses as they worked to determine the events leading up to the fatal collision.
According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, several witnesses reported that Scott had allegedly been operating the motorcycle recklessly and at a high rate of speed before the crash occurred. Authorities said those witness statements will be considered as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police noted there was no evidence of impairment on the part of either driver at the scene. Officials have not released additional information regarding possible contributing factors beyond the preliminary findings and witness accounts.
The driver of the Mercedes remained at the scene following the collision. Authorities have not announced any charges, and the identity of the driver has not been publicly released.
Hermitage Avenue is a major roadway located southeast of downtown Nashville and serves as a connector between residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, and several heavily traveled transportation corridors. The area near Academy Place experiences a mix of local traffic, commuter traffic, and commercial vehicle activity throughout the day.
Motorcycle crashes involving crossing or turning vehicles often result in severe injuries because riders have significantly less protection than occupants of passenger vehicles. Investigators have not released information regarding whether protective equipment worn by Scott played any role in the outcome of the crash.
The Metro Nashville Police Department continues to investigate the collision and has not released a final determination regarding fault. As part of the investigation, officers are expected to review witness statements, vehicle damage, roadway evidence, and any available surveillance or traffic camera footage.
Nashville and the surrounding Middle Tennessee region have experienced substantial population growth in recent years, resulting in increased traffic volumes on many local roadways. Authorities routinely remind motorists and motorcyclists alike to remain alert at intersections, where many serious collisions occur.
Officials have not announced when the investigation will be completed. Additional details may be released as investigators finalize their findings regarding the fatal crash.
