GA Man Gordon Fields ID’d As Victim In Friday Marietta I-75 Fatal Crash

MARIETTA, GA. (THECOUNT) — Gordon Fields, 47, of Marietta, Georgia, was killed early Friday morning in a crash involving two tractor-trailers along Interstate 75 South near North Marietta Parkway, according to police.

The fatal collision occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Friday on Interstate 75 South in Cobb County after a tractor-trailer operated by Mayki Marcelin, 29, of Davenport, Florida, was stopped on the bridge along with surrounding traffic.

Investigators stated that after the roadway reopened and traffic began moving again, Marcelin’s tractor-trailer remained stopped in the southbound lane.

Authorities said a second tractor-trailer driven by Daniel Granados, 35, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was traveling southbound in the same lane and attempted to avoid the stopped truck.

Police said Granados swerved and grazed the left side of Marcelin’s tractor-trailer.

Moments later, a white Volkswagen operated by Fields struck the rear of the stopped tractor-trailer, according to investigators.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and pronounced Fields dead at the location of the crash.

The drivers of both tractor-trailers remained at the scene and are cooperating with investigators, authorities said.

No other serious injuries were immediately reported.

Authorities with the Marietta Police Department said the crash scene developed after an earlier wreck had shut down all southbound lanes of Interstate 75 for several hours.

According to investigators, traffic remained stopped on the bridge over North Marietta Parkway while emergency crews worked the earlier incident.

The Marietta Police Department’s traffic enforcement unit responded to investigate the deadly crash.

Interstate 75 South remained impacted during the overnight hours as investigators documented evidence and crews worked to clear damaged vehicles from the roadway.

The section of Interstate 75 through Marietta serves as one of metro Atlanta’s busiest transportation corridors, carrying significant commuter and commercial truck traffic between Atlanta and north Georgia.

The bridge area near North Marietta Parkway frequently experiences congestion during traffic incidents due to the high volume of overnight freight and passenger travel.

Authorities have not announced whether speed, visibility, distraction, or roadway conditions may have contributed to the fatal collision.

Police confirmed no charges have been filed at this time.

The investigation remains ongoing.
