MUNSTER TWP., PA. (THECOUNT) — Calvin Ates, 27, of the Nanty Glo area, Pennsylvania, was killed early Monday in a motorcycle crash along Admiral Peary Highway in Cambria County, according to officials.

The fatal crash occurred near Loretto in Munster Township, located west of Cresson in central Pennsylvania.

Ates, a former Cambria County Prison Corrections Officer, had been traveling east on Admiral Peary Highway on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle when the crash occurred.

According to Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees, the accident was reported at approximately 1:55 a.m. Monday, May 18.

Lees stated it was not immediately known exactly when the actual crash took place.

Investigators said a passing motorist discovered the motorcycle lying in the middle of the roadway and contacted emergency services.

Responders arriving at the scene located Ates approximately 80 feet from the motorcycle.

Officials confirmed Ates was pronounced dead at the crash site.

According to the coroner, Ates suffered multiple blunt force trauma injuries, including severe head injuries.

Lees said those injuries were determined to be the cause of death.

A helmet was recovered at the scene of the crash.

However, investigators said it was not immediately clear whether Ates had been wearing the helmet at the time of the collision.

The incident prompted an overnight response from Pennsylvania State Police, firefighters, EMS personnel, and county officials who secured the area while investigators documented the crash scene.

Traffic along Admiral Peary Highway was affected while emergency crews conducted the investigation and removed debris from the roadway.

Authorities have not yet released information regarding what may have caused the motorcycle to crash.

No other vehicles were mentioned as being involved in the incident.

Pennsylvania State Police continue to investigate the fatal motorcycle crash.
