SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC. (THECOUNT) — Justin Robert Johnson, 37, has been identified as the motorcyclist who died following a single-vehicle crash Saturday evening in Spartanburg County, located in northwestern South Carolina near the North Carolina border, according to authorities.

The crash occurred shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday, May 16, on Mud Creek Road near the intersection of Hickory Nut Road.

According to investigators, Johnson was operating a motorcycle westbound on Mud Creek Road when he traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a guardrail.

Authorities said Johnson was the sole occupant of the motorcycle.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported Johnson to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office later confirmed Johnson died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Officials have not publicly identified the hospital where Johnson was transported.

The collision prompted an emergency response in the area of Mud Creek Road Saturday evening as law enforcement officers and first responders secured the crash site and conducted the initial investigation.

Traffic in the area was affected while troopers documented the scene and cleared the roadway.

Authorities have not publicly stated what may have caused the motorcycle to leave the roadway.

Investigators also have not released information regarding speed, impairment, weather conditions, or possible mechanical issues.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues investigating the fatal collision.
