LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL. (THECOUNT) — Theodore J. Belvin, of Toney, Alabama, was killed Saturday night when his motorcycle left the roadway and struck a ditch on U.S. Highway 31 near Martin Lime Road in Limestone County, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency confirmed. Belvin was 55.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:43 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026, on U.S. 31 near Martin Lime Road, approximately four miles southwest of Tanner, Alabama. Limestone County Coroner Mike West confirmed the fatality.
Belvin was ejected from the motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
Limestone County is located in northern Alabama, bordered by Madison County to the east, Morgan County to the south, Lawrence County to the southwest, and the Tennessee state line to the north. The county seat is Athens, situated approximately 15 miles west of Huntsville, one of Alabama’s largest cities and home to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and Redstone Arsenal. Toney, where Belvin resided, is a small unincorporated community in the eastern portion of Limestone County, located approximately 10 miles north of Athens.
U.S. Highway 31 is a major north-south corridor running through Limestone County, connecting communities from Athens north toward Tanner and the Tennessee state line. The stretch of U.S. 31 near Martin Lime Road passes through a rural and semi-rural landscape characteristic of northern Alabama’s Tennessee Valley region, with open fields, scattered residences, and limited lighting conditions that can present challenges for motorists, particularly after dark.
Tanner is an unincorporated community in northern Limestone County, situated along U.S. 31 near the Tennessee River. The community serves as a small but well-known landmark along the corridor between Athens and the Tennessee state line. The crash site approximately four miles southwest of Tanner places the incident in an open rural stretch of the highway.
Motorcycle fatalities remain a serious public safety concern across Alabama and the nation. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists are disproportionately represented in fatal crash statistics relative to other vehicle types, owing to the lack of structural protection afforded to riders. Single-vehicle crashes involving loss of control and roadway departure — such as the one that claimed Belvin’s life — are among the most common fatal motorcycle crash patterns, particularly on rural highways where road edges and drainage ditches can pose significant hazards.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division is the primary state agency responsible for investigating fatal crashes on Alabama roadways. No additional details regarding speed, road conditions, or other contributing factors have been released at this time.
