MARION COUNTY, FL. (THECOUNT) — A 22-year-old female motorcyclist from Deer Island was killed Saturday night after being rear-ended on Interstate 75 in Marion County, Florida, and thrown into the path of a second vehicle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Marion County is located in north-central Florida, with Ocala serving as the county seat, approximately 80 miles north of Orlando in the greater Ocala metropolitan area.
The identity of the motorcyclist has not been released, pending the ongoing investigation.
The crash occurred at approximately 9:23 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026, on Interstate 75 near mile marker 349 in the southbound lanes, near the Liberty Triangle community in southwestern Marion County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol crash report, the motorcyclist was traveling southbound in the outside lane of I-75 when a sedan struck her motorcycle from behind. The impact ejected her from the motorcycle and directly into the path of a sport utility vehicle traveling in the center lane. She was struck by the SUV.
She was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead.
No occupants of the sedan or the SUV were injured in the crash.
The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the fatal crash.
The crash marked at least the third fatal motorcycle crash in Central Florida on Saturday, following unrelated fatal motorcycle crashes in Orange County and Volusia County the same evening.
Deer Island is a small rural community located in Lake County, Florida, situated along the shores of Lake Dora approximately 30 miles south of the crash site. The community is accessed via a causeway and is home to a small residential population in the rolling hills of Lake County’s lake region.
Liberty Triangle is an unincorporated census-designated place in southwestern Marion County, bordered to the north by Ocala and to the east by Interstate 75. Mile marker 349 lies just south of the State Road 200 interchange, placing the crash along the eastern edge of the Liberty Triangle community.
Interstate 75 is one of Florida’s primary north-south corridors, running from the Georgia state line south through Ocala, Tampa, and Naples before terminating at the southern tip of the state. The stretch of I-75 through Marion County passes through a largely rural corridor near Ocala and carries significant long-haul and commuter traffic.
Marion County encompasses over 1,600 square miles of north-central Florida and is home to more than 375,000 residents. The county is known regionally as the “Horse Capital of the World” due to its concentration of thoroughbred horse farms and equestrian facilities. Ocala, the county seat, serves as the commercial and governmental hub of the region.
