Route 17, also known as George Washington Memorial Highway, is a major north-south corridor on the Virginia Peninsula, running through York County and connecting the Hampton Roads region to communities to the north including Gloucester. The roadway carries significant daily traffic volume and serves as a critical artery between the Peninsula and surrounding areas.
York County is situated within the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, one of the largest metro regions on the East Coast. The county borders the city of Newport News to the south and James City County to the west, and is home to Joint Base Langley-Eustis, a major U.S. military installation. Interstate 64 runs through the region, connecting Hampton Roads to Richmond to the west.
Virginia State Police pursue reckless driving cases under state law, which defines reckless driving as operating a vehicle at speeds 20 mph or more over the posted limit or in excess of 85 mph regardless of the posted speed limit. Pursuit and crash investigations of this nature are handled by VSP traffic investigators and may result in a determination of charges even in cases where the suspect is deceased.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. No further details have been released at this time.
