KNOXVILLE, TN. (THECOUNT) — A man and a woman were killed early Thursday morning when the motorcycle they were riding rear-ended another vehicle on Interstate 40 West in Knoxville, Tennessee, according to the Knoxville Police Department. The identities of both victims are being withheld pending notification of family members.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 1:20 a.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2026, on westbound Interstate 40 near Walker Springs Road in West Knoxville. Officers from the Knoxville Police Department responded to the scene and found a man and a woman who had been ejected from a motorcycle. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to KPD spokesman Scott Earland, the preliminary investigation — including witness statements — indicates that the two victims were riding westbound on the motorcycle when it collided with the rear of another westbound vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene when officers arrived. No other injuries were reported.
KPD fatal accident investigators are handling the case. The investigation remains ongoing.
Interstate 40 near Walker Springs Road is located in the West Knoxville corridor, a heavily developed commercial and residential section of the city situated along the Tennessee River. The Walker Springs Road interchange is near the junction of I-40 and Interstate 640, making it one of the more heavily traveled sections of the freeway system in Knox County. The area includes major retail centers, medical facilities, and residential neighborhoods on both the north and south sides of the freeway.

Motorcycle fatalities on the Interstate 40 corridor through Knoxville have drawn repeated attention from KPD and Tennessee Highway Safety officials, particularly during evening and overnight hours when visibility is reduced and traffic enforcement presence is limited.
The Knoxville Police Department fatal accident investigation unit is leading the case. No further information has been released.
