Florida Man Dies In Sunday Jackson County Motorcycle Crash

COTTONDALE, FL. (THECOUNT) — A Cottondale man is dead following a motorcycle crash Sunday morning in Jackson County, Florida, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The victim has not been identified at this time.

According to FHP, the man was traveling north on Lakepoint Road just before 9:00 a.m. when he approached a curve just east of US Highway 231 and misjudged the turn. Rather than following the curve, the motorcycle continued straight, veering onto the northeast shoulder of the road.

The motorcycle came to a final rest on the right side of the roadway. The rider came to rest on his back with his legs pinned beneath the motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Florida Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Jackson County Fire and Rescue.

Lakepoint Road is a rural two-lane road in Jackson County located just east of US Highway 231, a major north-south corridor running through the Florida Panhandle. The curve where the crash occurred has previously been the site of other serious crashes — in August 2025, a single-vehicle crash at the same Lakepoint Road and Highway 231 area claimed the life of a Marianna woman when a driver failed to navigate a sharp turn, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and strike a tree.

Cottondale is a small town in Jackson County with a population of approximately 900 residents. Jackson County is located in the Florida Panhandle, bordered by Alabama to the north and situated approximately 65 miles northwest of Tallahassee and 75 miles northeast of Panama City. The county seat is Marianna. Nearby communities include Graceville, Sneads, Grand Ridge, and Alford.

The Florida Highway Patrol is the lead investigating agency. FHP has not released the rider’s name, age, or any additional details about the crash, including whether speed, road conditions, or rider error were contributing factors beyond the reported misjudged turn.

Fatal motorcycle crashes are a persistent problem along rural Panhandle roads, where sharp curves, narrow shoulders, and high speeds create dangerous conditions for riders. Jackson County has seen multiple fatal motorcycle crashes in recent years, including a January 2026 crash on Interstate 10 that killed a 45-year-old woman and a May 2025 crash on US Highway 231 in which a Cottondale man died after his motorcycle struck the rear of a tractor-trailer.

No charges have been announced. The investigation remains active and ongoing. The Florida Highway Patrol has not indicated when the victim’s identity will be released.

Anyone with information about this crash is encouraged to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.
