BERING SEA, AK. (THECOUNT) — Todd Morgan Meadows, a rookie deckhand aboard the fishing vessel Aleutian Lady, has died at sea while working during an active filming season of the Discovery Channel’s long-running reality series “Deadliest Catch.” He was 25.
Meadows, a native of Montesano, Washington, began working as a deckhand on the Aleutian Lady in May 2025. Montesano is a small city in Grays Harbor County in western Washington state, approximately 100 miles southwest of Seattle. Captain Rick Shelford publicly announced Meadows’ death on Monday, March 2, 2026, confirming that he died on February 25, 2026 — calling it “the most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady on the Bering Sea.”

Meadows died in a fishing-related incident while the vessel was operating on the Bering Sea, according to sources familiar with the matter. The Bering Sea lies between Alaska and Russia and is the primary operating ground for the crab fishing fleet documented in “Deadliest Catch.” The exact circumstances of his death have not been publicly disclosed by authorities or the production. It is unclear whether the incident was captured on camera by the show’s crew, who were present aboard the vessel at the time.
Following his death, a memo was sent to “Deadliest Catch” producers informing them of the incident and providing grief support resources for those affected, according to sources close to the production.

Captain Shelford, who has captained the Aleutian Lady on the series since Season 19, posted a tribute to Meadows on Facebook, describing the young deckhand as a man who quickly became part of the crew’s family despite being its newest member. Shelford noted that Meadows’ love for fishing and strong work ethic immediately earned the respect of his fellow crewmen. “Right now, our hearts are broken in a way that words can’t fully express,” Shelford wrote. “We ask that you lift Todd’s children and family in prayer and keep them in your thoughts as they face the days ahead without him. Todd will forever be part of this boat, this crew, and this brotherhood.”

In a statement provided to media, a spokesperson for the Discovery Channel said: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Todd Meadows. This is a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his loved ones, his crewmates, and the entire fishing community during this incredibly difficult time.”
A GoFundMe campaign was established in Meadows’ memory and had raised over $11,000 as of Monday. The fundraiser identified Meadows as a father of three young boys. “We are heartbroken to share the sudden passing of Todd Morgan Meadows, a beloved 25-year-old father, son, brother and friend, who left us far too soon while doing what he loved — crabbing out on Alaskan waters. He was a determined dad to three amazing little boys who were his entire world.”

We are heartbroken to share the sudden passing of Todd Morgan Meadows, a beloved 25-year-old father, son, brother and friend, who left us far too soon while doing what he loved — crabbing out on Alaskan waters. He was a determined dad to three amazing little boys who were his entire world. Everything he did was for them — their smiles, their futures, and the memories they will carry with them.
This unimaginable loss has left his children without their father, his parents without their son, his siblings without their brother and his family broken. As the family navigates this heartbreaking time, we are raising funds to help support his three boys, assist with funeral expenses, and help ease the financial burden in the months ahead. Any donation, no matter the size, will go directly toward honoring his life and ensuring his boys are cared for in the way he would have wanted. If you are unable to give, please keep our family in your prayers and his name alive like he wanted.
“Deadliest Catch” premiered on the Discovery Channel on April 12, 2005, and currently airs worldwide, with its Season 21 premiere having aired on August 1, 2025. The series follows crab fishermen aboard vessels operating in the Bering Sea during the Alaskan king crab and snow crab fishing seasons, with the fleet’s base of operations at the Aleutian Islands port of Dutch Harbor, Alaska. The show’s title reflects the high rate of injury and death associated with commercial crab fishing, which is consistently ranked among the most dangerous occupations in the United States by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Deckhands aboard these vessels are responsible for hauling heavy crab pots, working extended shifts in extreme weather, and operating in near-freezing water temperatures — conditions that have claimed lives throughout the show’s two-decade history.
The cause of Meadows’ death and the status of any official investigation by the U.S. Coast Guard or Alaska State Troopers had not been publicly confirmed as of Monday. No further details were immediately available regarding next of kin beyond his three children.
