KY Man Daniel Hyatt Shot Dead In Friday Harrodsburg Home Invasion; Homeowner Not Charged

HARRODSBURG, Kentucky (THECOUNT) — Daniel Hyatt, 36, was shot and killed early Friday morning during what authorities describe as an alleged home invasion, according to the Harrodsburg Police Department.

Harrodsburg Police Chief Scott Elder said officers were dispatched around 5 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, following a 911 call reporting a shooting at a residence in the 300 block of York Street, according to WKYT reporting from the scene.

“We received a 911 call from this address, this residence behind me, in reference to a shooting,” Elder said.

When officers arrived, they began securing the scene and investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting inside the home. Authorities have described the incident as isolated and say there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The Mercer County Coroner’s Office later identified the man who was shot and killed as 36-year-old Daniel Hyatt. Officials said his body is being transported to Frankfort for an autopsy as part of the standard investigative process.

Chief Elder stated that the homeowner involved in the incident has not been charged at this time. Police have not released additional details regarding what led up to the shooting inside the residence or the relationship, if any, between Hyatt and the homeowner.

Neighbors in the area told reporters they did not hear gunfire during the early morning hours and were surprised to see a heavy law enforcement presence in the neighborhood after sunrise. Police vehicles remained at the scene for several hours as investigators documented evidence and worked to determine the sequence of events.

Authorities emphasized that the shooting is believed to be confined to the residence and does not pose a danger to surrounding residents. Investigators continue to review evidence collected from inside the home and are working to establish a timeline of what occurred prior to the 911 call.

Fatal shootings that occur inside private residences often require extensive investigation, including forensic documentation, interviews, and review of physical evidence before officials release further details publicly. Police have not indicated when additional information may be made available.

Chief Elder confirmed that the call for service came directly from the residence where the shooting occurred. Law enforcement has not stated whether anyone else was inside the home at the time or whether there were additional witnesses to the incident.

The Mercer County Coroner’s Office is assisting in the investigation by confirming identity and cause of death following the autopsy. That process is standard in fatal shooting cases and helps investigators complete their reports.

At this time, authorities have not announced any charges related to the shooting and have not indicated whether charges are expected as the investigation continues.

The Harrodsburg Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged home invasion and shooting as they work to determine exactly what occurred inside the residence early Friday morning.
