Matthew Smith ID’d As DUI Suspect In Crash That Killed Beloved NY Officer Patricia Espinosa

SAINT JAMES, NY (THECOUNT) — Police Officer Patricia Espinosa, 42, of the Nassau County Police Department, was killed early Saturday morning when a suspected drunk driver ran a red light and struck her vehicle on Route 347, according to the Suffolk County Police Department. The alleged DUI driver, Matthew Smith, 20, of Hauppauge, and his passenger, John Andali, 25, were injured in the crash and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Authorities said the crash occurred around 6:06 a.m. when Espinosa was driving westbound in her Alfa Romeo. Smith allegedly failed to stop at a red light in his Chevrolet Silverado pickup and collided with Espinosa’s vehicle, causing fatal injuries. Emergency responders immediately transported Espinosa to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Smith and Andali were also taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Smith was subsequently taken into custody and charged with driving while intoxicated. Police impounded both vehicles involved in the crash as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.

The crash has sent shockwaves through both the local community and law enforcement agencies. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said he was “heartbroken” over the officer’s death and ordered flags at all county buildings to be flown at half-staff until Espinosa’s funeral.

Espinosa had served with the Nassau County Police Department for several years and was highly regarded among her colleagues for her dedication and professionalism. Co-workers described her as a committed officer who always put the safety of the community first.

The incident underscores the dangers of impaired driving on Long Island roadways, where high-traffic corridors such as Route 347 see thousands of commuters each day. Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash, including the possibility of additional charges depending on their findings.

Suffolk County Police continue to examine the scene, collecting evidence and statements from witnesses. Investigators said they will review traffic camera footage, vehicle data, and other analytical resources to reconstruct the events leading to the fatal collision. The Nassau County Police Department is coordinating with Suffolk County authorities to ensure a thorough investigation.

Friends and colleagues of Espinosa have taken to social media to express their condolences. Many emphasized her commitment to public service and her impact on the Nassau County community. “Patricia was an outstanding officer and an incredible person,” one co-worker wrote. “Her loss is felt by everyone who knew her, and we will honor her memory.”

The crash also serves as a warning about the severe consequences of impaired driving. Authorities remind motorists that operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs not only endangers the driver but also innocent members of the public, including first responders.

Espinosa is survived by her family, colleagues, and the broader community she served throughout her law enforcement career. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, but Nassau County officials confirmed that services will be held with full honors to recognize her service and sacrifice.

Police officials encourage anyone with additional information about the crash to come forward and assist in the investigation. Officers stress the importance of reporting impaired drivers to help prevent similar tragedies.

Authorities continue to work on the case, and further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
