‘Home Alone’ Mom Catherine O’Hara Dies

TORONTO, ON (THECOUNT) — Catherine O’Hara, 71, the legendary Canadian actress best known for her role as Macaulay Culkin’s mother in the first two “Home Alone” films, has died, multiple sources with direct knowledge confirmed Friday.

O’Hara’s passing marks the loss of one of Hollywood’s most celebrated comedic performers, whose career spanned decades in film, television, and voice work.

A cause of death has not been released.

O’Hara gained international recognition for her performance as Kate McCallister in “Home Alone” (1990) and “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” (1992). She later became widely known for her Emmy-winning portrayal of Moira Rose in 80 episodes of the acclaimed television series “Schitt’s Creek.”

Her Emmy for “Schitt’s Creek” came in 2020, following her earlier Emmy win in 1982 for writing contributions to the sketch comedy series “SCTV Network 90.” O’Hara was also nominated for her role in the Apple TV+ series “The Studio,” where she appeared alongside Seth Rogen.

O’Hara’s filmography included notable live-action and voice performances. She appeared in the 1988 comedy “Beetlejuice,” as well as the 1989 cult classic “Beetlejuice” sequels. She was featured in Christopher Guest’s mockumentaries, including “Best in Show” (2000) and “A Mighty Wind” (2003). Additional credits included “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” (1987), “After Hours” (1985), “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993), “Chicken Little” (2005), “Over the Hedge” (2006), “Where the Wild Things Are” (2009), and “For Your Consideration” (2006).

Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, O’Hara was the sixth of seven children. She met her husband, production designer Bo Welch, on the set of the 1988 film “Beetlejuice.” The couple married in 1992 and had two sons, Matthew and Luke.

O’Hara’s influence extended beyond her performances, with her work on “SCTV” helping to shape modern sketch comedy. She received widespread recognition for her versatility, seamlessly transitioning between live-action comedy, television drama, and animated voice work over her career.

The last known public sighting of O’Hara was at Los Angeles International Airport in February 2024. At that time, she was asked which role she most wanted to be remembered for, reflecting on her decades-long career in entertainment.

Catherine O’Hara’s contributions to film and television have left an indelible mark on the industry, earning her acclaim from audiences and peers alike. Her performances continue to influence a new generation of comedians, actors, and writers.

No additional details regarding the circumstances of her death were released as of Friday evening. Family and colleagues have not commented publicly.
