Byron Reedy ID’d As Driver In Hit-And-Run That Killed Beloved Larry ‘Flag Man’ Haywood

SAVANNAH, GA. (THECOUNT.COM) — The Savannah Police Department has arrested 38-year-old Byron Reedy in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that killed Larry Haywood, widely known throughout Savannah as “The Flag Man.”

Haywood, a beloved figure in the community, was often seen near local intersections waving flags and directing traffic safely, earning him his nickname among residents. For years, he became a familiar and respected presence along Skidaway Road and other busy streets, advocating for pedestrian and cyclist safety while volunteering his time to assist drivers and neighbors alike.

The fatal incident occurred on April 9, 2025, at approximately 8:55 p.m. Savannah Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit responded to reports of a hit-and-run collision at the intersection of Skidaway Road and East 49th Street. Haywood, riding his bicycle at the time, was struck by a motor vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital after being treated on the scene, but later succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities arrested Reedy on January 21, 2026, charging him with homicide by vehicle, hit and run resulting in death, serious injury by motor vehicle, tampering with evidence, operating a vehicle without a tag, no proof of insurance, driving with a suspended license, and failure to yield right of way to a bicyclist in connection with the crash. Reedy was taken into custody by SPD Traffic Investigators.

Residents and friends have long remembered Haywood for his dedication to community safety. His volunteer work as “The Flag Man” earned him recognition from neighborhood associations and local cyclists, who often cited his presence as helping prevent accidents in busy areas. Local businesses near Skidaway Road also noted his friendly demeanor and commitment to ensuring children and pedestrians crossed streets safely.
