SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (THECOUNT) — Erica Fox, 55, the Pacific Grove swimmer who disappeared during a group ocean swim last month, has been identified by her family as the woman whose body was recovered from a remote Santa Cruz County beach, following what witnesses described as a suspected shark attack.
Fox went missing on December 21 while participating in a regularly scheduled swim near Lovers Point in Pacific Grove, a coastal area along Monterey Bay that is commonly used by open-water swimmers and divers.
She was swimming with roughly a dozen other members of Kelp Krawlers, a cold-water swim group she helped co-found. The group traditionally meets at Lovers Point every Sunday.
According to witness accounts, a large splash was observed in the water around midday during the swim. Shortly afterward, Fox did not return to shore with the rest of the group, prompting concern among fellow swimmers.
A driver later reported to the U.S. Coast Guard that they observed a shark breach the water with what appeared to be a human body before submerging again. Another swimmer in the group also confirmed that Fox was missing following the incident.
Multiple agencies launched a coordinated search effort, including the U.S. Coast Guard and local emergency responders. Crews searched the surrounding waters and coastline for signs of Fox but were unable to locate her.
The search was formally suspended Monday evening after authorities said no additional evidence had been found.
Then, on Saturday at approximately 12:35 p.m., CAL FIRE CZU assisted with the recovery of a woman’s body from the water near a secluded beach south of Davenport, close to Wilder Ranch State Park in Santa Cruz County.
Officials described the recovery location as a “remote pocket beach” along a rugged stretch of coastline with limited access. The site is located roughly 45 miles north of Pacific Grove.
Fox’s father, James Fox, confirmed to KSBW 8 that the recovered woman was his daughter. He said she was identified based on the clothing she was wearing at the time she went missing.
The Santa Cruz County Coroner’s Office, which handles official identifications, has not released the woman’s name publicly and has not issued a cause of death.
Authorities have also not confirmed whether the death has been officially classified as a shark attack. Investigators have not released details regarding the condition of the remains or whether further forensic analysis is underway.
Fox was known within the local swimming community for her involvement with Kelp Krawlers, a group that promotes open-water swimming in the cold waters of Monterey Bay.
Following confirmation from Fox’s family, several members of the Kelp Krawlers group gathered at Lovers Point on Sunday to hold an informal memorial in her honor, according to James Fox.
Lovers Point remains a popular recreational area, and while sharks are known to inhabit Monterey Bay, confirmed interactions involving swimmers are uncommon.
Officials have stated that any additional updates regarding identification or investigative findings will be released once the coroner’s examination is complete.
