Students Killed In Brown University Shooting Identified

PROVIDENCE, RI. (THECOUNT) — Two students have been identified by their communities as MukhammadAziz Umurzokov and Ella Cook following a shooting on the campus of Brown University Saturday. Providence police and Rhode Island state authorities are actively investigating the incident, which also left nine other individuals injured.

The shooting occurred in the central area of Brown University’s campus, prompting an immediate law enforcement response. The campus was secured, and students, faculty, and staff were sheltered in place while authorities assessed the situation. Counseling and mental health services were made available to those affected by the incident. The university has not announced whether classes or campus activities will be canceled in the immediate aftermath.

Umurzokov, a freshman, grew up in Virginia and attended Midlothian High School, according to Chesterfield County Public Schools officials. His family described him as compassionate, driven, and dedicated to helping others. A GoFundMe page established in his memory highlighted his ambitions of becoming a neurosurgeon and his consistent willingness to support friends, classmates, and family. “He always lent a helping hand to anyone in need without hesitation, and was the most kind-hearted person our family knew,” his family wrote.

Information regarding Ella Cook’s background has not been released publicly. Community members have expressed grief and solidarity, and Brown University officials are coordinating with her family as next-of-kin notifications are completed. Police emphasized that the victims’ identities were confirmed by their communities and are pending official release.

Authorities have not released information about a suspect, motive, or weapon type used in the attack. Investigators continue to gather evidence, review surveillance footage, and conduct interviews with witnesses. Officials have indicated there is no ongoing threat to the campus or surrounding area at this time.

The shooting has brought renewed attention to campus safety and emergency preparedness at universities nationwide. Brown University administrators emphasized the importance of security measures, rapid response protocols, and the provision of mental health resources for students and staff in the wake of violent events.

Students, faculty, and community members have expressed condolences and shared tributes to Umurzokov and Cook. Memorials and vigils have been organized, honoring both students for their positive contributions to the campus and local communities. Their families, classmates, and friends have highlighted the potential the students had and the impact they made during their time at Brown University.

Law enforcement continues to coordinate closely with the university as the investigation unfolds. Security personnel remain present on campus while authorities collect additional information, review evidence, and pursue leads. Officials have asked anyone with relevant information to contact Providence police to assist with the ongoing investigation.

The tragic event has left the Brown University community and surrounding areas in mourning. Administrators and public safety officials are working to ensure that support is provided to those affected while maintaining security on campus. The incident underscores the continuing need for preparedness, rapid response, and mental health support in academic institutions.
