MURFREESBORO, TN. (THECOUNT) — Denise J. Bradley, 63, of Murfreesboro Tennessee, was identified as the pedestrian killed in a multi-vehicle crash Wednesday night on Interstate 840 Westbound in Rutherford County, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 7:14 p.m. near the 56-mile marker, prompting extended closures on both sides of the interstate.
Authorities reported that two vehicles were involved in the collision. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s preliminary findings, a 2019 Honda Pilot was traveling westbound on I-840 when it struck a 2006 Toyota Corolla. The Corolla was partially blocking the roadway after being involved in a separate recent crash. Investigators said that during the impact, the Honda Pilot also struck a pedestrian standing near the vehicles. That pedestrian—identified as Bradley—died from her injuries at the scene.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol stated that charges are pending for one of the drivers involved. No specific details regarding the nature of the pending charges have been released, and investigators have not released the identities of either driver. No additional injuries were reported in the crash, according to the preliminary report.
The collision caused significant disruptions to travel in the area. Interstate 840 Westbound was shut down for several hours while emergency crews, investigators and troopers responded to the scene. Due to the position of emergency vehicles and the need to secure the crash site, the left eastbound lane was also blocked for a period of time. Officials did not indicate an exact reopening time for all lanes, though traffic resumed later in the night.
No further information about the initial crash involving the Toyota Corolla was released, and authorities have not stated whether weather, visibility or other roadway conditions contributed to the incident. The Tennessee Highway Patrol continues to investigate and will release additional findings as they are confirmed.
The fatal collision marks another serious roadway incident in Rutherford County, an area traversed by major Tennessee traffic corridors, including Interstate 24, Interstate 840 and multiple state highways. As of the latest update, the Tennessee Highway Patrol has not issued further statements regarding the ongoing investigation or potential charges stemming from the crash.
