Mystery: Engaged Couple Found Dead in ‘Separate Rooms’ Of Hotel, Belongings ‘Untouched’

HOI AN, VIETNAM. (THECOUNT) — In a deeply unsettling turn of events, Greta Marie Otteson, a 33-year-old British woman, and her 36-year-old South African fiancé, Arno Quinton Els, were found deceased in their rented villa in Vietnam, notably in separate rooms. The couple was discovered on December 26, 2024, in the Hoi An Silverbell villa located in Hội An, a city renowned for its historical charm and tourism, according to reports from The Times.

The scene was uncovered by the villa’s cleaning staff around 11:18 a.m. local time, with social media manager Otteson found in her bed in room 101 and Els, a stand-up comedian, in room 201.

Initial police investigations, as detailed by Vietnam News, did not reveal any signs of physical harm or struggle. “There were no signs of ransacking at the scene. The victims’ belongings and phones were untouched,” a provincial police spokesman told The Times. This absence of evident trauma or disturbance has only deepened the mystery surrounding their deaths. The local police, as cited by The Guardian and Vietnam News, noted the presence of empty alcohol bottles in the rooms where the couple was found.

The couple had been residing in Hội An since July 4, 2024, after registering for long-term temporary residence at the villa, which suggests they intended to spend an extended period in Vietnam. The Quảng Nam Provincial police are actively probing into the circumstances leading to this tragic end, with no conclusive cause of death reported yet.

Adding a poignant dimension to this sorrowful narrative, just weeks before their untimely demise, Otteson and Els had shared a moment of pure joy with the world. In December, they posted a video on the YouTube channel of Red Eye Studios to announce their engagement. The video captured them in the romantic ambiance of Hội An, holding hands, and sharing laughter and love. Els, describing their journey in the video, remarked, “We’re just two people from opposite ends of the world, living in Asia, doing it together, which is quite precious.” This announcement was a celebration of their love, a stark contrast to the grim reality that followed.

Otteson, known for her entrepreneurial spirit, was the founder and social media manager of Not Sorry Socials, a company focused on social media and content marketing. Her vibrant life across continents, from Los Angeles to Paris and Dubai, before settling in Vietnam, is well-documented on her social media profiles. Els, on the other hand, brought his talents as a stand-up comedian and musician to the relationship, enriching their life together in this new chapter in Vietnam.

The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has confirmed their involvement, stating they are supporting Otteson’s family and coordinating with local Vietnamese authorities in the wake of this tragedy.

The Hoi An Silverbell villa, where the couple spent their last days, did not provide immediate comments when approached by PEOPLE Magazine, leaving many questions unanswered as the investigation continues.

As the community and their families grapple with this loss, the video of their engagement remains a bittersweet testament to the love they shared, now overshadowed by the unresolved mystery of their passing.

Hội An is a city on Vietnam’s central coast known for its well-preserved Ancient Town, cut through with canals. The former port city’s melting-pot history is reflected in its architecture, a mix of eras and styles from wooden Chinese shophouses and temples to colorful French colonial buildings, ornate Vietnamese tube houses and the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge with its pagoda.
