Brittany Miles & Olivia Alvarez ID’d As Women Killed In Sunday Iowa Police Chase Crash

WASHINGTON COUNTY, IA. (THECOUNT) — Iowa State Patrol has released the names of two drivers killed in a horrific crash in Washington County, Iowa, following a police chase on Sunday afternoon. The victims were identified as Brittany Miles, 36, of Cedar Rapids, and 27-year-old Olivia Alvarez.

According to the Muscatine Police Department, the incident began at around 3:15 p.m. when they received multiple emergency calls reporting a woman involved in a shooting spree in Muscatine. Officers responded swiftly, and an attempt was made to stop the suspect on Park Avenue. However, the woman, later identified as Brittany Miles, refused to comply with the police directive to halt, leading to a high-speed chase.

The pursuit escalated quickly, moving from Muscatine city limits into Washington County, culminating on Highway 218, just two miles south of Riverside. Here, in a desperate attempt to evade capture, Miles veered her vehicle into oncoming traffic, directly into the path of Olivia Alvarez’s car, causing a fatal head-on collision.

The Iowa State Patrol confirmed that Brittany Miles died instantly upon impact. Meanwhile, despite immediate life-saving interventions by first responders, Olivia Alvarez succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter. The exact details of the medical response, including the number of paramedics and the time taken for emergency services to arrive, are part of the ongoing investigation.

During the chase, the intensity of the situation was underscored by an accident involving a Muscatine police officer, who lost control of his vehicle near the Cedar River. He was treated for injuries at a nearby hospital but was reported to be in stable condition. This incident further highlights the perils law enforcement officers face during high-speed chases.

Despite the chaos and danger surrounding the chase, Muscatine Police confirmed that no individuals were injured in the initial shooting incidents that sparked the police response. This aspect of the event is also under scrutiny, with the police department reviewing how the situation escalated from a shooting to a deadly car chase.

The aftermath of this incident has left the Riverside community in mourning and has raised questions about pursuit policies, public safety, and the training provided to officers in such scenarios. The Iowa State Patrol, along with local law enforcement, are conducting a thorough investigation into the sequence of events, focusing on the decision to initiate and continue the chase, the condition of the vehicles involved, and the potential for alternative methods of apprehension that could mitigate such risks.

Community leaders and residents are calling for a review of chase procedures to prevent similar tragedies. Memorial services for both victims are being organized, with community vigils planned to honor their memory and to discuss road safety and law enforcement tactics.

Riverside is a city in rural Washington County, Iowa, United States, along the English River on Iowa Highway 22. It is part of the Iowa City, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,060 at the time of the 2020 census. It is part of the Highland Community School District.
