Major 7.0 Earthquake Strikes Northern California Prompting Tsunami Alert

PETROLIA, CA. (THECOUNT) — Northern California experienced a powerful series of earthquakes Thursday morning, shaking Humboldt County and prompting a tsunami warning along portions of the West Coast.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported a 6.6-magnitude earthquake in the city of Petrolia, approximately 50 miles southwest of Eureka, at around 10:45 a.m. The quake was later upgraded to a magnitude 7.0, confirming its significant impact.

Shortly after, a second earthquake measuring 5.8 magnitude struck near the coastal town of Ferndale, further unsettling residents in the region.

Tsunami Warning:

Following the quakes, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a tsunami warning stretching along the California and Oregon coastline. The alert extended from the Santa Cruz area in California up to the Douglas/Lane County Line in Oregon, emphasizing the potential threat to coastal communities.

Residents in the warned areas were urged to remain vigilant, monitor updates from local authorities, and prepare to move to higher ground if necessary. The NWS stressed that the situation was still developing and additional seismic activity could not be ruled out.

Impact and Immediate Response:

While detailed reports of damage or injuries were not immediately available, earthquakes of this magnitude are capable of causing structural damage, landslides, and aftershocks. Emergency services across Humboldt County and surrounding areas have been mobilized to assess the situation and respond as necessary.

Seismic activity is not uncommon in Petrolia, located within the seismically active region of the Mendocino Triple Junction, where three tectonic plates converge. This geological complexity often leads to significant earthquakes and heightened vigilance in the area.

Preparedness and Recommendations:

Experts recommend that residents in earthquake-prone areas ensure they have an emergency preparedness plan. This includes securing heavy furniture, identifying safe spots in buildings, and keeping emergency supplies, including food, water, and medical kits, readily available.

Authorities have encouraged residents to stay informed through official channels and to refrain from unnecessary travel to affected areas to allow emergency services to operate efficiently.

Continuing Updates:

As the situation unfolds, updates regarding damages, injuries, and tsunami developments will be provided by state and local authorities. Residents are advised to follow instructions from emergency officials and to stay updated through trusted news sources.
