MS HS Student Athlete Callie Pounders ID’d As Victim In Monday Corinth Fatal Vehicle Crash

ALCORN COUNTY, MS. (THECOUNT) — A tragic accident claimed the life of Corinth High School student Callie Pounders on Monday morning, November 4. The 17-year-old student from Corinth, Mississippi, lost control of her vehicle on County Road 408 and died after being taken to the hospital. The accident and its devastating aftermath have left the Corinth community mourning the loss of a beloved student.

According to Alcorn County Sheriff Ben Caldwell, Pounders’ vehicle veered off the road, and she attempted to correct her path. However, her car collided with a tree, causing severe injuries. Sheriff Caldwell confirmed that Pounders was rushed to a hospital in Corinth but succumbed to her injuries.

Pounders was a member of the softball, volleyball and powerlifting teams, according to a social media post.

In response to the tragic loss, Corinth High School Principal John Barnett shared the news on Facebook, expressing his condolences and acknowledging the impact of Pounders’ death on the community. The post also announced that counseling services would be available in the school commons for students and staff throughout the week. “The loss of Callie has shaken our school deeply,” Principal Barnett wrote. “Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and everyone whose lives she touched. We will have counseling services available for anyone who needs it.”

The Corinth School District also issued a statement recognizing Pounders as a cherished member of the school community, with administrators and teachers highlighting her involvement in school activities and the friendships she built during her time there. The district extended condolences to her family and pledged to provide support to all affected by her sudden passing.

Local authorities are investigating the accident to determine if any specific factors contributed to Pounders losing control of her car. Sheriff Caldwell confirmed that her vehicle’s departure from the road and subsequent collision with a tree were the primary causes of the fatal injuries but noted that the exact sequence of events leading up to the accident is still under examination.

The loss has had a profound impact on Pounders’ classmates, who have taken to social media to remember her as a kind and compassionate friend. Fellow students shared memories of her friendliness and her impact on their lives. Many have expressed gratitude for the school’s efforts in providing immediate counseling support. One friend wrote, “Callie was a light in everyone’s lives. She was a friend to everyone she met, and we’re going to miss her deeply.”

School staff, faculty, and parents have also been vocal in their support for Pounders’ family, sharing that her presence was widely appreciated at Corinth High School and that she will be remembered as a bright and promising young woman.

In Corinth, the community has shown an outpouring of sympathy and support for the Pounders family. Local businesses and residents have contributed to a memorial fund to assist with funeral expenses, and a candlelight vigil is being planned in her memory.

The loss of a young life has highlighted the importance of community support in times of tragedy. Local churches have opened their doors to grieving students, offering space for those who may not feel comfortable sharing their grief in the school setting.

The accident has served as a solemn reminder for Alcorn County residents and young drivers about the potential dangers on the road. Sheriff Caldwell urged all drivers, particularly young ones, to take extra caution when traveling on rural roads, which can often be narrow and curvy.

As the community mourns Callie Pounders’ loss, her memory remains in the hearts of her family, friends, classmates, and teachers. Corinth High School will continue offering support to students and staff to help them cope with the tragedy and process their grief.
