Men Arrested as Seven Kids Discovered in Back Of U-Haul Truck; Immigration Enforcement Alerted

WEBSTER COUNTY, MO. (THECOUNT) — Authorities in Missouri have arrested Shaikiem Bristol and Musa Omar, after discovering seven children in the back of a U-Haul truck on Interstate 44, raising concerns about child endangerment and the children’s immigration status.

On Sunday around 4:30 p.m., Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers pulled over a U-Haul truck for a moving violation. Inside, they found seven children, ages 2 to 13, crammed into the cargo area. The truck had no power, air conditioning, or proper ventilation, making conditions inside dangerously hot and unsanitary.

The men in charge of the truck, 31-year-old Bristol and 22-year-old Omar, were promptly arrested and charged with seven counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, creating substantial risk. The arrests have prompted further investigation by federal immigration officials.

Conflicting Stories and Suspicious Behavior:

According to court documents, Bristol and Omar gave conflicting accounts of their journey to authorities. Bristol initially told troopers they were traveling to Buffalo, New York, after picking up a girl in Glendale, Arizona, who had been kicked out by her mother. However, inconsistencies in their stories and their visibly nervous demeanor raised suspicions.

Bristol informed the trooper that Omar had rented the U-Haul and that they had begun their journey on September 24, driving from New York to Arizona. Two women were also in the truck’s front passenger seat, whom Bristol claimed were his sister and fiancée. The women, like Bristol, exhibited short, rapid breathing, leading troopers to believe they were hiding more details about their trip.

As the troopers dug deeper, Bristol revealed that the cargo area of the U-Haul held five adults and seven children. At this point, authorities called for backup, arresting Bristol and the women and transporting the truck to the Webster County Jail for further inspection.

Discovery of Children in Dire Conditions:

When officers opened the back of the U-Haul, they were met with oppressive heat, no air circulation, and the sight of dirty diapers, food containers, and trash scattered around. The children appeared disheveled, sweaty, and overheated from the lack of air conditioning. Several of them had not had their diapers changed in hours.

Bristol admitted to authorities that he was aware of how hot it was in the truck’s cargo area, and that they tried to stop every hour or two to cool the children down. Despite this, the children were still found in distressing conditions, which led to immediate concerns for their well-being.

When questioned about why the children had been brought along, Bristol shockingly replied, “I have no idea why we took the kids.” This statement, combined with the hazardous conditions the children were exposed to, led to serious allegations of child endangerment.

Immigration and Human Trafficking Concerns:

As the investigation unfolded, agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the Department of Family Services (DFS) were called in to assess the situation. The involvement of these agencies indicates that there are potential concerns about the immigration status of the children and whether human trafficking might have been involved.

Authorities have yet to confirm whether the children were related to Bristol, Omar, or the women, or if they were being transported for other reasons. ICE and DHS are working alongside local law enforcement to determine the origin of the children and whether they crossed state or international borders illegally.

Legal Proceedings:

Bristol and Omar are currently being held without bond at the Webster County Jail. They are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, where more details about the nature of the trip and the children’s identities may come to light.

The Department of Family Services has taken custody of the children, ensuring that they are receiving proper care while the investigation continues. Authorities are also working to determine the exact relationship between the adults and children and whether any further charges, such as human trafficking, will be added to the case.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks many children, especially those of uncertain immigration status, face when involved in dangerous transportation situations. Federal and state authorities will continue to investigate the full scope of this case in hopes of preventing similar situations in the future.
