NEW JERSEY. (THECOUNT) — Michaela Mabinty DePrince, a renowned ballerina who rose to international fame from the war-torn country of Sierra Leone, has passed away at the age of 29. The news was shared through a heartfelt statement on her Instagram account, accompanied by a black-and-white image of the beloved dancer. While no cause of death was disclosed, the post reflected on her life, emphasizing her grace, strength, and passion for both dance and humanitarian work.
The Instagram post, shared by her team, praised Michaela’s dedication to her art and her efforts to make the world a better place. “Her grace, purpose, and strength were evident in all she did,” the statement read. It also highlighted that although her time was short, her legacy will continue to inspire those who knew her and followed her incredible journey.
From Sierra Leone to International Stardom:
Michaela’s life story is one of resilience and triumph over adversity. Born in Sierra Leone in 1995, she endured extreme hardship from a very young age. Her childhood was marked by the civil war that ravaged the country. After losing her parents, Michaela was taken to an orphanage. The situation grew even more dire when the orphanage was bombed during the conflict, forcing her to flee to a refugee camp.
In a stroke of fortune, Michaela’s life changed when she was adopted by a couple from New Jersey, Elaine and Charles DePrince. The DePrinces provided her with the support and opportunities she needed to pursue her dreams. From the moment she arrived in the United States, Michaela’s passion for ballet began to flourish.
A Rising Star in Ballet:
Michaela quickly made a name for herself in the world of ballet. Her natural talent and relentless determination led her to the prestigious Dance Theatre of Harlem, where she became the youngest member of the company. Her time there marked the beginning of her ascent in the international ballet world. Soon after, she took her talents across the Atlantic to join the Dutch National Ballet, further solidifying her status as one of the most promising ballet dancers of her generation.
In 2011, at just 16 years old, Michaela’s journey was featured in the critically acclaimed documentary First Position. The film followed young ballet dancers competing for spots in elite ballet schools, and Michaela’s story captivated audiences worldwide. Her appearance in the documentary showcased not only her remarkable talent but also her ability to overcome obstacles, inspiring many young dancers and fans around the world.
The following year, Michaela appeared on Dancing with the Stars, further extending her reach and influence in popular culture. Her performances consistently demonstrated her technical brilliance and emotional depth as a dancer.
Expanding Beyond Ballet:
Michaela DePrince’s talents were not confined to ballet. In 2018, she appeared in the music video for Brandi Carlile’s song “The Joke,” a powerful black-and-white clip in which Michaela performed graceful dance sequences as Carlile delivered her emotional ballad. Her involvement in the project brought her unique artistry to an even wider audience, earning her recognition not just in the dance world, but in music and entertainment.
In addition to her performing career, Michaela was an author who sought to inspire the next generation of dancers. Her memoir, Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina, detailed her incredible life story, from surviving war in Sierra Leone to achieving international fame as a dancer. She also authored a children’s book, Ballerina Dreams, which aimed to inspire young children, especially those from underrepresented communities, to pursue their dreams.
