FedEx Driver Arrested After Stealing Dog, Leaving In Hot Truck To Die As Deliveries Continued

HARNETT COUNTY, NC. (THECOUNT) — FedEx driver, Kimani Joehon Marshall, 44, from Fayetteville, North Carolina, is facing severe animal cruelty charges after allegedly stealing a French Bulldog named Tori during a delivery on July 3. Marshall reportedly kept the dog in his truck while continuing his route, leading to Tori’s death due to heat-related issues from high temperatures inside the vehicle.

The Harnett County Sheriff’s Office received a call about the stolen dog on July 7, sparking an investigation that revealed Marshall’s actions. According to court documents, Marshall had delivered a package in the area of U.S. 421 South when he allegedly took the dog from a residence. He continued his deliveries with Tori in the truck, which reached dangerously high temperatures.

The dog, valued at $5,500, suffered a tragic end due to the neglect and conditions it endured. French Bulldogs are particularly vulnerable to heat due to their brachycephalic (short-nosed) anatomy, which makes it difficult for them to regulate body temperature. Tori’s owners were devastated by the loss of their beloved pet, describing her as a gentle and affectionate companion who was adored by the entire family.

Marshall turned himself in on July 22 and has been charged with larceny of a dog, possession of stolen property, and cruelty to animals. He is currently held in the Harnett County Detention Center on a $50,000 secured bond. If convicted, Marshall could face significant legal consequences, including fines and imprisonment. The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with many calling for stricter regulations and training for delivery personnel to prevent such tragedies in the future.

In response to the incident, FedEx issued a statement expressing their deep regret and stating that they are fully cooperating with the authorities in the investigation. “We are shocked and saddened by this incident and extend our deepest sympathies to the family affected. The behavior described in this incident is not representative of the professionalism and dedication of our team members,” the statement read.

Animal rights advocates have also weighed in, using the case to highlight the importance of safeguarding pets during extreme weather conditions. “This heartbreaking incident underscores the need for increased awareness and responsibility when it comes to caring for animals, especially in hot weather. Pet owners and those who come into contact with pets in their professional capacity must take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety,” said a spokesperson for the local Humane Society.

As the investigation continues, Tori’s family and the community at large are left mourning the loss of a cherished pet and advocating for measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Harnett County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 133,568. Its county seat is Lillington; its largest community is Anderson Creek. Harnett County is part of the Anderson Creek, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area.
