ROCHESTER, N.H. (THECOUNT) — In a heartbreaking incident, Brig. Gen. John Pogorek, commander of the New Hampshire Air National Guard, was killed in a hit-and-run crash, authorities reported Tuesday.
The tragic event unfolded on Monday night as Brig. Gen. Pogorek, 57, was securing a load on his trailer on the side of the road in Rochester. An SUV struck him and continued without stopping, according to Rochester Police. The investigation led to the identification and location of the vehicle and its 81-year-old driver.
Brig. Gen. Pogorek’s distinguished career began with his graduation from the United States Air Force Academy in 1989. He joined the New Hampshire Air National Guard in 1999 and rose to the position of commander in 2022. In this role, he served as a top adviser to Gov. Chris Sununu and the state’s adjutant general, overseeing all operations at Pease Air National Guard Base.
“On behalf of the entire state of New Hampshire, I extend my sincere condolences to the family of Gen. Pogorek,” Sununu said in a statement. “Gen. Pogorek served his state, country, and community with honor. His commitment and contributions to the Granite State will never be forgotten.”
No charges have been filed yet as the investigation is ongoing.
