The letter from our Superintendent:

June 26, 2023

Dear Galway Families,

It is with a heavy heart that I write to all members of the Galway Central School District family. We learned this morning that one of our High School students was tragically killed in a car accident last night. Tyler Scocca was going into his senior year and has two younger siblings in grades 4 and 6 in the district.

Tyler was a very funny young man who was a friend to all. He wrestled for the varsity wrestling team and for Journeymen Wrestling. His quick wit and sense of humor will be deeply missed in our hallways and lives.

Coping with the loss of a child, friend, classmate, student is one of the hardest challenges that many of us will face. Please know that our crisis team is available to talk with anyone who needs support coping with this terrible loss. Counselors will be available on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 27 and 28, 2023 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Galway Junior/Senior High School – please use the Joseph Henry Elementary School entrance.

I encourage parents and guardians to talk with their children about this tragic loss. Discussing thoughts and feelings is important in helping your child work through his or her grief, shock, and confusion. We would also like to share the attached link of resources from the American Psychological Association for coping: http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/grief.aspx.

Our deepest condolences go to the Scocca and Phoenix families. Please keep Tyler and his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,
Brita Donovan
Superintendent

The cause of the wreck remains under investigation.
