SUMMIT COUNTY, CO. (THECOUNT) — Nick Feinstein, the son of University of Northern Colorado President Andy Feinstein, has been identified as the victim in a Sunday afternoon avalanche in Summit County.
Nick, 22, was killed after he and his father were buried in an avalanche on Sunday in Breckenridge.
According to reports, Nick and his dad were Skiing a backcountry area called the Numbers, outside the boundary of Breckenridge Ski Resort on Peak 10, when an avalanche occurred around 1 p.m. Sunday.
Andy was partially buried and was able to dig out and call for help.
Nick was fully buried and did not survive.
The Numbers is “a common area for people to leave the ski area and recreate in the backcountry,” according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. It has south- to southeast-facing terrain and at about 11,600 feet.
