HONOLULU COUNTY, HI. (THECOUNT) — Sione Veikoso, a Brigham Young University football player, has been identified as the victim in a workplace accident in Honolulu County, Hawaii on Friday.
Veikoso, 22, was killed, and three other individuals were seriously injured, after a 15-foot retaining rock wall collapsed in Kailua on Friday.
According to reports, Veikoso, a Kailua High School graduate, was working construction while on winter break at a home on Akiikii Place in Kailua, when the fatal accident occurred around noon Friday.
The fire department said bystanders used a mini excavator in a frantic attempt to free the workers.
Officials described the debris as a mix of heavy blue gravel and red dirt. Firefighters joined neighbors to free the men from the debris, digging by hand.
In all, six people were involved in the incident. Three victims were transported to area hospitals in serious but stable condition.
The cause of the collapse remains under investigation.
